How to start a freshwater generator

Freshwater generator is the machinery used for production of freshwater onboard. Sea water is evaporated using jacket water, and condensed using sea water to produce freshwater. Freshwater generator is started after the RFA is given. Before arrival, when the vessel receive 1 hour notice stop the freshwater generator. Following are the step by step procedure of starting of freshwater generator.

1. First setup the line for sea water condenser inlet and outlet.
2. Open the overboard valve.
3. Ensure the suction inlet and discharge of the ejector pumps are open.
4. Close the vacuum breaker valve.
5. Start the freshwater generator ejector pump.
6. Open the seawater inlet to the set pressure as per manual.
7. Run the ejector pump for approx. 20 min so that vacuum is created inside the condenser side.
8. Next open the jacket water outlet and alternatively open inlet of jacket water inlet & close bypass.
9. Monitor the shell temperature, when the shell temperature is reached to 50degC  or as per manual reading , start the distillate pump.
10. Power “ON” the salinity meter.  Open the relief valve on distillate pump. When the salinity is reached <1ppm start opening the discharge valve of the distillate pump.
11. Check the flow through the site glass and adjust the discharge pressure as per manual.
